HOUSTON (AP) - Hundreds of transplant recipients ran, danced, bowled and competed in other events this week as part of the Donate Life Transplant Games in Houston, a multi-sport series designed to raise awareness of organ, eye, and tissue transplants.

The games began in 1990, overseen by the Kidney Foundation. Transplant Games of America CEO Bill Ryan says his nonprofit was established in 2010 to oversee the games after the Kidney Foundation withdrew its sponsorship. The money raised, about $2 million this year, is designed to raise awareness and inspire.

Walt McGuire, who competed in a 400-meter race, had a heart and kidney transplant in 2011. Pointing at Houston Methodist Hospital across from where the games are held, McGuire says it feels incredible because he didn't know if he'd ever leave there.
