Beaumont man gets 50 years for 2 slayings

Posted: Updated:

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - A Southeast Texas man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for gunfire that killed his girlfriend and one of her male relatives.

Jose Chinchilla of Beaumont pleaded guilty Wednesday to murder in a plea deal over the 2012 deaths of 24-year-old Francisca Garza and 44-year-old Gregorio Sanchez.

The 30-year-old Chinchilla initially was charged with capital murder and could have faced the death penalty if convicted.

Beaumont police say Chinchilla went to a residence where Garza was visiting relatives including Sanchez, who was a great-uncle to three of her children.

Chinchilla, who also had a child with Garza, argued with her and Sanchez tried to intervene.

Garza and Sanchez were shot dead on a street.

Chinchilla must serve at least 25 years in prison before being eligible for parole.
