SILVER CITY, N.M. (AP) - A 31-year-old southeastern New Mexican man will serve life in prison after pleading guilty in the fatal beating of a 3-year-old girl whom he punished for soiling her pants.
The Silver City Sun-News (http://bit.ly/1zMH2if) reports that Nicholas Grijalva Jr. of Mimbres pleaded guilty last week to child abuse resulting in the death of a child under age 12.
In exchange, prosecutors dropped seven other charges stemming from the February 2013 death of Alizandra Jasso.
Grijalva's girlfriend told Grand County sheriff's deputies that Grijalva had punished the child for soiling her pants by slamming her down on the toilet, slamming her against it and slapping the girl on the chest and face.
