Food for Thought: 7/17

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Dozens of restaurants were inspected, but only a few of them made this week's Food for Thought list - and they're not all at the top.

KCBD NewsChannel 11's Christy Hartin dishes out the details.

Texas Cafe and Grill at 3604 50th had seven critical violations.

  • Chili was not cooling properly. This can allow for the growth of bacteria.
  • Milk, salsa and potato salad were above the safe cold temperature of 41 degrees.
  • Onions were not in good condition.
  • Raw eggs were stored above ready to eat foods.
  • Turkey, ham and sausage were held past their date mark. Ribs and potato salad did not have a date mark.
  • Toxic items were not labeled. Personal medication was stored with food items in a cooler.
  • A sanitizer solution for dishes was not strong enough.
The report shows all violations were corrected. Management tells us their kitchen staff has been retrained and their re-inspection was perfect.

Fuzzy's Taco Shop at 2102 Broadway also had seven critical violations.

  • Multiple cold foods were above 41 degrees. Drink mixes labeled "refrigerate after opening" were kept at room temperature.
  • Employees did not wash their hands when changing gloves.
  • Tongs were on the faucet of a hand sink.
  • There was no soap at a hand sink.
  • There were flies in the kitchen.
  • There was a dead fly in a container of shrimp. The racks in the walk-in cooler were dirty and debris was falling onto food. An employee used the same tongs to handle raw seafood and cooked chicken.
  • A food container was cracked.
Management tells us everything was quickly corrected. The report shows that as well.

And here are this week's top performers:

  • Burger House at 2405 19th
  • Copper Caboose at 5609 Villa Dr.
  • Rejavanate Coffee Bar at 6524 Slide
  • Silver Bullet at 5145 Aberdeen
  • Texas Steak Express at 9810 Indiana
