Wayland Baptist University has named former Pioneer player and coach Rick Cooper as its new director of athletics.

Cooper, who played and coached basketball at Wayland before an extended coaching career at nearby West Texas A&M University, replaces Dr. Greg Feris, who recently resigned after 24 years as director of athletics.

A native of Bridgeport, W.Va., Cooper played basketball at Wayland from 1977-81. He served as an assistant coach at WBU for five years and head coach for six, from 1987-93. He earned both Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from WBU.

Cooper went on to West Texas A&M in Canyon where he spent 20 years as head men’s basketball coach. In 26 years as a head coach at Wayland and WT, Cooper never had a sub-.500 season.

Cooper received the third-ever Harley Redin Coach’s Award in 2002 and was inducted into the Wayland Athletics Hall of Honor in 2012.
