SEAGRAVES, TX (KCBD) -
Construction of a new elementary school in Seagraves is underway after residents voted in favor of passing a $12 million bond.
The new facility will offer larger classrooms with sliding partitions that allow for the flexibility of classes working together as well as new safety features and teaching technologies.
The current elementary school was constructed in 1939, and, while improvements have been made to the building throughout the years, the school board thought it would make more sense long term to invest time and money into a new facility.
Seagraves Elementary School Principal Junior Martinez grew up in Seagraves and remembers walking the halls of what will soon be the old elementary school campus and he says he's excited to be a part of this new chapter.
"All the years I grew up here, Seagraves invested in me and Seagraves put it's stock in me, so now it's great to come back and be able to put back into Seagraves and watch this newer generation, this younger generation, come up and grow up. It's cool," said Martinez.
Martinez said that construction is expect to be completed by September or October of this year, and, if everything goes smoothly, the transition to the new campus could begin by the end of this year or the beginning of next year.
Martinez says a committee is exploring options for what the old campus will be used for.
