Police: Man hit by 18-wheeler on Hwy 271 is blind, stepped into roadway

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Two eyewitnesses tell KLTV a man was walking across the road on Highway 271, near Loop 323, when he was hit by an 18 wheeler. A witness just behind the truck said the truck slowed and tried to swerve and miss the man walking in the road. The witness also said when she first saw the man he was standing in the middle of the road then started walking to the west side of highway 271.

Tyler Police PIO Don Martin says that the 41-year-old Hispanic male, Ananias Reyna Martinez, who was struck, is blind. He is believed to have accidentally stepped into the roadway and was hit on the shoulder of the road as the truck was swerving to miss him. Martin says it appears the semi was close to being stopped when the man was struck. Martinez lives in the area.

He received non-life-threatening injuries to the left side of his head and was not transported to the hospital, according to the police report.
