A Break In a Case of a Hit and Run Fatality

On Tuesday night, police arrested a man they strongly believe is responsible for last week's hit and run fatal in East Lubbock.

Red tape still marks the spot on E.17th Street where 46-year-old Sheila Austin was hit by a car. She died in the hospital two days later. Now, a 44-year-old man, whose identity is still unknown, is behind bars. He was picked up for outstanding warrants, including violation of parole. So far he has not been charged in her death.

Police discovered the man's white car was damaged in the front, the windshield was shattered, and a wiper blade was missing. The night of the hit and run, police found a wiper blade at the crime scene.

NewsChannel 11 talked to close friends of Sheila's on Wednesday, who just two days ago attended her funeral. They were happy to hear of the arrest. "I think whoever did that should pay for it. Because she was a sweet person. She never bothered nobody," said Thelma Turner.

Police tell us the man faces a felony charge. It's expected to be filed next week.
