Splurge Smartly This Thanksgiving

Even if you're on a diet, you should splurge a little and enjoy your Thanksgiving meal.

That great idea comes from the American Dietetic Association, which includes this advice:

"Splurging on Thanksgiving day is not going to kill anyone, and you probably won't even gain weight, that is if you don't splurge again on Friday, Saturday and Sunday," says Katherine Tallmadge,with the American Dietetic Association.

The ADA says there is a method to smart splurging:

  • Don't skip breakfast,
  • Prioritize the fattening stuff you really want the most, then try to balance the other half of your plate with good healthy choices.
  • Eat slowly because it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to get the signal that you've had enough.
  • And perhaps the most important tip...send leftovers home with your guests, so you won't be tempted to overindulge all weekend.

Lastly, don't forget the USDA Turkey Hotline if you need help in the kitchen Thursday. Just call 1-800-535-4555. Operators will be standing by in the morning, but even if you wake up with a desperate question in the middle of the night, they have pre-recorded food safety guidelines that should answer any question you might have.
