LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A Lubbock County Grand Jury has indicted 27-year-old Maria Isabel Martinez for failure to render aid in the hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of 38-year-old Matthew Aaron Valadez.

Police say Valadez was out for a run in the 200 block of Iola Avenue the morning of July 15 when he was struck by a car traveling northbound.

Police say the vehicle left the scene with no attempt to render aid. A passerby contacted police 30 minutes after the accident occurred to report an unconscious subject near the roadway.

Accident investigators found evidence of a hit and run but were unable to find Martinez’ vehicle. Two days later, on July 17, a Crime Line tip led police to Martinez. She was taken into custody and released on an $80,000 bond after eight days in jail.

Martinez admitted to investigators that she was involved in a collision in the 200 block of Iola Ave on July 15, but denied hitting Valadez. She told investigators she hit a pole. Investigators said none of the poles on that street had damage and her car did not have the same kind of damage as a vehicle that hit a pole.

The Texas transportation code says when failure to render aid results in the death of a person, it is considered a second degree felony. Martinez may face from 2 to 20 years in prison.

CORRECTION: The DA's office contacted us on Tuesday night and said we were initially given the wrong information about the severity of charges against Martinez. KCBD regrets the error.
