The Texas Tech Health Sciences Center is welcoming their largest class ever.

183 students took part in Fridays's White Coat Ceremony. It's the ultimate symbol of becoming a doctor, marking the student's transition from pre-clinical to clinical study.

“It's a celebration for these students as they begin their medical career,” said Dr. Steven Berk, Dean of the Health Sciences Center.

“For most of them,” Berk said, “this has been a life-long dream - to put on a white coat and begin their medical education."

During the ceremony, students also took an oath about what it means to be a physician.

More than 100 medical schools in the U.S. now have a white coat ceremony, and many students consider it a rite of passage in the journey toward a healthcare career.
