Red Raiders ready to prove doubters wrong

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The Texas Tech Red Raiders held their first of 23 practices Monday night, leading up to the season opener as they host Central Arkansas on Aug. 30.

Texas Tech is preseason pick No. 6 in the Big 12 Conference, but Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury says that’s not extra motivation for this team.

"I think we're past that. Last year no one picked this team to go to a bowl game. So we're trying to prove people right now. The true Red Raider fans are behind us and show them how good we really are.”

The Red Raiders Starting Quarterback Davis Webb was unfazed by the projection.

"It's preseason. That's fine. Oklahoma State a couple years ago was No. 6. Baylor was picked No. 6 last year so that just tells you what everybody knows. We'll find out every Saturday."

Tech started out last season 7-0 before a five-game slide. They finished up with a huge Holiday Bowl win, but Receivers Coach Eric Morris says the preseason ranking is based off of that.

"It's probably where we should be after everything that happened last year. You definitely have to earn your respect. There's a lot of good teams in the conference: Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State have put a run of three to four years where they've done some good stuff. They deserve to be up there right now and that's what we're shooting for every day and that's why we come to work and what we're focused on.”

With season tickets sold out and a humongous home schedule at Jones AT&T Stadium, Receiver Bradley Marquez and the Red Raiders plan to do their talking on the field.

"It's nothing for us. We'll go into each game preparing to win, so we don't think about the preseason rankings or anything of that nature. We know what we are capable of as a team so we can't pay much attention to that. We will go in and worry about what we can control and go from there."
