Odessa girl still in hospital after wreck; no charges expected for parents

ODESSA, TX (KCBD) -

A 5 year old girl from Odessa remains hospitalized in Lubbock Thursday afternoon, following an accident involving an underage driver.

Authorities say it happened Tuesday night, when the girl jumped out of the bed of a pickup driven by a 13-year-old boy.

The girl suffered life-threatening injures, and was flown to UMC for treatment.

Police cited the boy for driving without a license, but they tell KOSA-TV that they don't believe the boy's parents will be charged.

"Through our investigation, we found that the mom is a single parent and the kids had gone over to a friend's house in this vehicle while she was at work, so she wasn't even aware of what the kids were doing. it would be kind of hard to meet those elements to try to charge the parent."

Police say the 13-year-old driver and the 5-year-old girl are not related.
