LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

When Kenny Williams, Texas Tech’s leading rusher the last two seasons, moved over to defense in the spring, Running Back DeAndre Washington was more than ready to step up this season.

"It's opened up the door. Opportunity. Couldn't ask for nothing more. Sometime things happen for a reason. Now you have to take advantage," Washington said.

Washington was the second leading rusher last season with 485 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground. Plus, Quinton White will see more time with the ball. Williams knew the rushing game was in capable hands when he jumped to defense.

"That's why it hasn't been too hard moving over to the defensive side of the ball, knowing you have guys over there that'll take care of the job no matter what. DeAndre, he really has been the guy who pushed me when I was on that side of the ball."

Washington is excited to carry the load when called on.

"Big year man. I've been really working hard along with the fellas the whole off season. I'm looking to stay healthy and have a big season much better than last season put it like that."
