Lubbock County Republican Party hosting candidate forum for Charles Perry seat
Precinct Chairman Irene Howell
LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -
The Lubbock County Republican Party will host a candidate forum on Thursday for the House District 83 seat, currently held by Charles Perry.
Representative Perry has announced that he will run for the Senate District 28 seat and that he will not be seeking re-election to his seat in the Texas House of Representatives.
Precinct Chairman Irene Howell says the forum will help the party determine who will be selected to be put on the ballot in November.
"It's a real complicated process," Howell said. "That is one reason, as a precinct chair along with some others, we thought it was really important to get grass roots involved both in the process and understanding what is going on."
"The county chairs and a representative from Lubbock County will meet in a district executive committee meeting called by the state party chairman," she said. "They will decide who should be on the ballot in the November general election."
Howell hopes that the candidate chosen will be able to take on the issues facing West Texas and the entire State.
"We want someone who understands that we have critical problems right now with immigration, with water, and we want to see Texas Tech be tier one," she said. "We want them to work with the legislature to see that West Texas stands out. We are the most conservative part of Texas, and we want our leadership to reflect that."
If Perry wins the Senate race in September, his staff says his office in the House will continue to function until the new representative is sworn-in in January. If he loses, he will be out of the Texas Legislature.
