A warning for moms from the FDA....why teething gels might not be as safe as you think

A warning from the FDA today, about pain medication used on teething babies.

Apparently, the side effects can be serious...even deadly.

Teething is a normal but painful process for babies, so parents often grab a medicated topical numbing gel to soothe the gums.

But this summer, another warning from the FDA, that prescription Lidocaine or even over the counter numbing gels, if used inappropriately, or too often, are too strong for a baby.

"Those children can have seizures, confusion, heart abnormalities and there were several deaths," says Dr. Patricia Flanagan with Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

The FDA suggests says parents are better off using natural remedies, like a cold wash cloth, or those little teething rings you keep in the refrigerator.

And just like moms have done for generations, you can give your baby some relief just by rubbing or massaging the gums with your finger.
