Davis Webb ready for break-out season

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Last year at this time it was Baker Mayfield emerging as Texas Tech's starting quarterback, while Webb was battling a severe illness that left him 40 pounds lighter and on the bench for the Red Raiders season opener at SMU.

What a difference a year makes.

Mayfield is now backing up Trevor Knight at Oklahoma while Webb is the unquestioned starter for Texas Tech. He's being heralded as "the next big thing" in the Big 12, after his MVP Holiday Bowl performance, and instead of losing weight, Webb's added 30 pounds of muscle this offseason to go along with a more vocal leadership role on the team.

Add it all up and it has his coach and teammates raving about his potential.

"I expect him to be one of the top guys in the country," Kingsbury said during Texas Tech Media Day. "He has that ability and has shown that type of command and that type of focus this offseason. I expect him to have a great year for us."

"He's going to have a huge jump from year one to year two," Senior Wide Receiver Bradley Marquez said. "Now that he's the guy, his confidence has gone through the roof and people are going to see that on the field."

Considering Webb was just an 18-year old freshman last season, his final numbers were pretty solid. The 6-foot-4 quarterback out of Prosper, threw for 2,315 yards, completing 63 percent of his passes for 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

But most games were a mixed bag of good and bad. He did some things really well, but also showed lapses in judgment that far too often resulted in turnovers. Becoming a more consistent quarterback is what Webb is striving for this season.

"I really didn't play well for a full game last season," Webb said. "Like the Oklahoma game, I threw two touchdowns but I also had two interceptions. Putting it all together for four full quarters is what I need to work on most."

Through all the ups and downs of his freshman season, the Holiday Bowl was the exclamation point for it all. Webb dominated the Arizona State defense to the tune of 403 yards and four touchdowns on 28-of-41 passing, en route to a commanding 37-23 Red Raider victory. That final impression is what fuels Webb's optimism for this year.

"Expect the Holiday Bowl each and every week from the team, not just from me," Webb said. "That was a good game for me but I think I can do better. Our team is working our butts off and we expect that kind of showing every week."
