Many South Plains farmers will soon have to follow new rules when it comes to irrigation.

On Tuesday, the High Plains Underground Water District approved changes that limit farmers to 18 inches per acre, per year. That goes into effect on January 1, 2015.

Farmers must keep track of their water usage. Board members have approved several tracking options, including meters and monitoring energy consumption.

The HPWD is responsible for conserving groundwater in 16 West Texas counties, including Lubbock.
