FDA finds new way to test for colon cancer

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a non-invasive, DNA based test for colon cancer.

It provides an option for some people who do not want the more invasive colonoscopy screening test.

The new test is called "colo-guard". But it is intended for patients with low risk. For example, no family history of the disease.

Instead of going through a colonoscopy, this test checks stool samples for DNA mutations that could be a sign of cancerous or pre-cancerous growths.

But a positive test would indicate the patient would then need to follow up with a colonoscopy.
