Experts say new rib surgery might help kids born without ears

An amazing new technique in England is giving children born without ears new hope at gaining a more natural appearance.

Doctors in London are using ribs to build ears.

It's actually a rare condition, called Microtia, which brings babies into the world without one or both ears.

In this new technique, doctors are removing cartilage from the ribs to build a framework in the shape of the external ear. Then, after it is sewn into shape, it is inserted under the skin by the ear opening. Then, the skin is pulled tight over the framework, instantly forming the look of a "normal" human ear.

"There's huge psychological benefit for them and I think if you can change the confidence of a patient at this young age, you'll change their whole trajectory in life,” says plastic surgeon Neil Bulstrode.

This surgery only fixes the look of the ear. These kids will need a different kind of technology to improve their hearing.
