The prospect of snow has the Texas Department of Transportation's road maintenance crew ready to hit the streets and keep roadways safe through the night.
Caring for over 150 structures like bridges and on/off ramps is no cheap venture. One semi full of "Meltdown 20" or Magnesium Chloride costs about $10,000. By Monday night, it was ready to be loaded into trucks and deposited onto highways.
Tx-DOT moved it's fleet of seven trucks inside earlier in the day and mounted the spreaders on them. Plows were also moved inside, in case Lubbock gets some accumulation. Shy Dotson, TxDOT Maintenance Supervisor, says, "You have to get some snow out there to get accumulation enough to blade. If it's just light snow, traffic will get around alright. It has to be at least deep enough that the plows can do some good."
Half of Tx-DOT's maintenance department will be out if the roads need it. The other half is on standby.
