Woman dies from injuries following officer-involved accident

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A woman has died from from her injuries after an officer-involved accident at Clovis Road and North Loop 289 on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say Morgan Lee, 20, was driving a 2012 Hyundai Veloster headed southwest in the 3600 block of Landmark Lane, crossing Clovis Highway.

Officer Cody Kidd was driving a marked LPD vehicle, a 2011 Chevy Tahoe, heading southeast in the 3400 block of Clovis Highway.

The vehicles collided at an intersection controlled by a traffic signal, but the investigation of this incident is still in progress.

The accident happened around 1:50 p.m.

Police are interviewing two independent witnesses who saw the accident.

Officer Kidd was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.

Funeral services for Morgan Lee will be handled by Hamil Family Funeral Home in Abilene.

Lubbock Police have now issued a statement about the accident.  A release issued by Assistant Chief Greg Stevens states:

"Yesterday afternoon, 20 year old Morgan Lee from Abilene was involved in a tragic, and ultimately fatal, traffic accident with a Lubbock Police Department patrol vehicle driven by Police Officer Cody Kidd. Officer Kidd was on his way to a non-emergency report of a suspicious person and vehicle when the collision occurred at the North Loop 289 west bound access road and the Clovis Highway. 

The Lubbock Police Department's Accident Investigation Section is continuing their investigation into this accident, and more details will be released as they become available. 

As in all fatal accidents occurring in Lubbock, this matter will eventually be presented to a Grand Jury for independent review. Additionally, all motor vehicle accidents involving LPD employees operating LPD vehicles, regardless of injuries, are reviewed by the department's Accident Review Board. 

That Board is comprised of LPD commanders, who make recommendations regarding accident responsibility, as well as appropriate repercussions, to the involved employee's Assistant Police Chief.

Officer Kidd was treated and released from UMC yesterday with minor injuries and it currently on Injury Leave status."
