Could sharks be the key to finding a cure to cancer? Some researchers believe so

Scientists have long been looking to the sea for answers in the fight against cancer. Now, researchers at a marine laboratory in Florida think they're onto something.

Dr. Carl Luer is leading the team there, and he believes the immune system of a shark could ultimately help humans block cancer cells.

Why sharks? Because they rarely get sick.

"Sharks have a low incidence of disease in general and what's interesting is they have a low incidence of cancer. We've tried to give them cancer and we've not been able to do that."

Dr. Luer and his team removed and studied the cells from the immune system of a bonnet head shark. And they learned that those cells secrete a compound that also blocked the growth of human cancer cells!

It is an important discovery, so now, they're trying to replicate these compounds in a lab.

He says trials on humans could be years away. But apparently, the scientific world thinks this is very promising, because Dr. Luer has been applauded internationally for his work.
