Mahomes 'impresses' in first scrimmage

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Texas Tech's team scrimmage over the weekend was closed to fans and media, but it didn't take long for word to spread that the backup quarterback position seems to be in good hands.

Highly-touted freshman, Patrick Mahomes, was that good.

"He did real well," Kingsbury said. "I think he threw five touchdowns and scrambled around and made plays. He doesn't know the system yet all the way but his natural ability can get him out of some things and he did a good job of extending plays and leading the offense on drives."

The former Whitehouse star has been projected all along as the clear No. 2 quarterback after the departures of Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), Michael Brewer (Virginia Tech) and Clayton Nicholas (Bowling Green) in the offseason.

But after his impressive showing in the team scrimmage, his teammates not only feel comfortable with him backing up Davis Webb, but are confident he can play well enough to win if that should happen.

"I think Pat made everybody realize that we have a quality backup," Webb said "If I were to go down, we have a chance to still win some games. He did great. I was really proud of him."

Of course, coach Kingsbury is hoping he can play Mahomes without it being because of an injury to Webb. If the Red Raiders have a big enough lead—in say, the teams opener against Central Arkansas---then fans can expect to see Mahomes in an actual game setting.

"We want to play him as much as we can," Kingsbury said. He came into a tough situation. Ideally you like to redshirt true freshman. He knows we're bringing him here to play and so he'll play as much as we can get him into the games."

Week 3 of Texas Tech's football fall camp is underway and there are still questions on both sides of the football. The air raid attack is to be expected, but Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury likes what he's seen from the Red Raiders backfield so far.
