A new type of car for the disabled...made right here in Texas

There is a factory in the Czech Republic that is trying to pave the way for those that are disabled but would still like to keep their independence.

The Light Construction Factory has begun producing small energy efficient cars exclusively for use with a wheelchair. It's a little car with just one door at the front that allows the driver who needs a wheelchair to enter the car directly from the street.

It includes a laser guide at the door to help move the wheelchair up the ramp into the right position. Then, a locking system secures the wheelchair into place. And, to top it off, the car is controlled by hands-only.

The car is so small, it only carries that one person. But, what freedom it gives the disabled.

It's powered by a scooter engine, with a top speed of about 60 miles an hour.

We did a little digging and found that there is a company right here in Texas that is making cars like those from the Czech Republic. The company is called ‘Kenguru’, and they are based out of Pflugerville, that's about 17 miles northeast of Austin.

The cars won't be released for another 12 to 18 months, but you can put down a $100 deposit to reserve your very own Kenguru. For more information, just go to http://www.kenguru.com/.
