Red Raiders 'see light at end of tunnel' in summer practices

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Summer practices aren't fun. Sure they're important, but they're long, they're grueling, they take place in 95 plus degree weather, and the worst part: there's two of them a day.

But the Red Raiders are almost through it. Next Monday, the team will forego two-a-days for "game week" preparation for Central Arkansas.

"We're to the point where we're about to split up into scout teams," Coach Kingsbury said. "They can see the light at the end of the tunnel. That's helped pick up the practices. We're tired of playing against each other."

The players say the monotony of summer practices can wear on them day after day. But when the season is this close to starting, the sense of urgency kicks in to be as prepared as possible.

"Absolutely, because we can feel it coming," Junior linebacker Pete Robertson said. "Next week we're gonna slow it down a little bit. But we feel the energy coming because we're ready for August 30."

"We've got to sharpen things up and get ready for that game and be as prepared as possible for Central Arkansas," said Senior receiver Bradley Marquez.

Kingsbury says year two of summer practices are "night and day" from a year ago. Last year at this time the team was still learning the new system. This year they're more comfortable and as a result, much better.

"We've improved," Kingsbury said. "We're not in game shape yet, but we'll push through this week and be ready to go for that first one."
