FLOYD COUNTY, TX (KCBD) - Two people are dead and two remain in the hospital after an accident on State Highway 207 near the Floyd County line.

DPS officials say 19-year-old Hunter Schwertner of Floydada, was traveling at a high rate of speed when his vehicle hit the back of a Jeep driven by Nancy Cooper of Matador just after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

They say the impact caused Cooper's vehicle to travel into the southbound lane, causing a head-on collision with a pickup driven by George Wilke of Post.

Both Schwertner and Wilke were pronounced dead at the scene by a Floyd County Magistrate.

Cooper and the passenger in George Wilke's vehicle, Robert Wilke of Post, were taken to University Medical Center. Cooper is listed in satisfactory condition while Robert Wilke remains in critical condition.

Schwertner graduated as salutatorian from Floydada High School where he was highly involved in extracurricular activities.

KCBD actually reported on Schwertner back in May, when he and a group of high school students were national qualifiers in Business Professionals of America.

They traveled to Indianapolis to compete. He was part of the video production team that brought home the grand prize.

Floydada High School Principal Wayne Morren is one of many deeply saddened by the loss of Schwertner

"He was a very accomplished young man, lived life to the fullest, so the news is tragic and he will be greatly missed," Morren said.

Schwertner had moved to Austin after graduation where he began classes at University of Texas. Morren said he was on his way back home to visit before returning for the fall semester.

"On Facebook, his mom had posted 'Hunter is coming home today' and she was looking so forward to that," Morren said.

However, Schwertner never made it home.

Family tells KCBD they have arranged a Rosary at St. Alice in Plainview at 6 p.m. on Friday. Funeral Mass will take place at St. Alice at 10 a.m. on Saturday. A memorial service for Schwertner will be at First Baptist in Floydada at 2 p.m. on Saturday with a burial to follow in Floydada.

Friends of George Wilke also reached out to KCBD; they said everyone who knew him called him GB.

They said he graduated from Post High School in 1972 and became a part of the Close City Community where he worked as a cotton farmer.

A longtime friend described Wilke as the "nicest, kindest person" anyone would ever meet and "one of the best cotton farmers around."

He was described as a true friend and his death has left a void in the community.

Friends say GB's brother Robert, who goes by Robbie, also works as a cotton farmer.

Members of the community said they are devastated by this tragic news.

DPS says the investigation is still ongoing.
