Red Raiders look to fill cornerback position

With the prolific passing offenses in the Big 12 Conference the cornerback position is vital for a defense to slow teams down.

A year ago, Texas Tech was at the bottom of the league in turnover margin at -14 with the defense only accounting for eight interceptions which was tied for worst in the league.

With only one proven starter at corner returning for the Red Raiders, the team is looking for several underclassmen to step up.

Scrimmage number three of summer camp is approaching and cornerbacks Coach Kevin Curtis likes what he's seen from the youngsters so far:

"I think Tevin (Madison) and Jah'shawn (Johnson) have both done good as Freshman", Curtis said, "Thierry (Nguema) has had a good camp, La'Darius (Newbold) has gotten better and Nigel (Bethel) has done some good things, so the whole group has done some good things to work and see who is going to be the other guy on the other side of Justis (Nelson)."

Sophomore Justis Nelson played in five games in 2013 and has the most experience of the group.

He saw some playing time as a Freshman due to injury and tallied five solo tackles against Baylor in his first start and solidified his position as an impact player win an interception that sealed the win late in the Holiday Bowl.

Nelson is the only named starter at his point of camp but he has faith whoever is opposite of him will be effective.

"Right now it really could be anybody, Nelson said, "Both the Freshman Tevin and Jah'shawn have great effort. They've had through the roof effort so they are definitely going to be a part of this defense. Thierry and Newbold are both doing good work so we are going to be pretty deep at corner."

Each practice, the Red Raider defense faces one of the best quarterbacks in the country, Davis Webb, as well as the one of the fastest receiving cores.

Coach Curtis hopes that daily experience will help prepare this cornerback group for facing the challenges Big 12 offenses create.

We do know this, two cornerbacks will start on August 30 against Central Arkansas.

From there, it may be a revolving door until one person sets themselves apart to play opposite of Nelson.
