Suspect in custody after South Lubbock hit-and-run

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

One person is in custody after a hit-and-run accident Wednesday afternoon.

Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety say 34-year-old Karla Tores of Lubbock hit a construction worker, identified as 44-year-old Tony Bournes, with her car while working near Highway 87 and Woodrow Road around 2:30 p.m.

Bournes was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.

DPS says Tores hit Bournes as she drove through the intersection of Highway 87 and Woodrow Road before driving south on towards Tahoka.

Lynn County authorities were able to locate and arrest the Tores just north of Tahoka. She was arrested for failing to stop and render aid.

"There are construction zones around Lubbock, not just here at this intersection. You do need to slow down and pay attention for these workers as well as the intersections themselves with a lot of traffic and a lot of obstacles in the way," said DPS Cpl. John Gonzalez.

"We've had workers severely injured as well as killed at these construction zones, so motorists really need to pay attention to these construction sites around Lubbock. Slowing down is the biggest first of all and then paying attention as they go through the construction site."

Dianah Ascencio says this accident is a reminder that drivers need to be more careful.

"When you're entering a construction zone the normal driving conditions don't apply. There may be some uneven payment, concrete barriers, cones and barrels so it is so very important for motorists to pay attention to their surroundings, slow down, be patient so they can make it through the work zone safely and our construction workers can stay safe as well,” she said.

"There are over 2,500 active construction zones in the state of Texas at any one time so we do caution motorists when they enter a work zone, not only for their safety but for the safety of the workers, to pay attention, slow down and be patient when they are traveling through a work zone."

DPS says their investigation is ongoing and there is no word if any drugs or alcohol were involved.
