New art project on TTU campus

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - As college students continue their first week of class, a unique project is underway on the Texas Tech University Campus.

The university's public art department is working on a brand new installation called "Texas Rising."

The pieces are around the new West Village Dorms.

There are six stainless steel sculptures - all similar - until you get up close to them.

Some have different carvings and cutouts.

The cutouts in the sculpture are related to Tech in some way.

The biggest sculpture has LED lights and is touch sensitive so viewers can change the colors of the piece.

Tech's Public Art Manager, Emily Wilkinson says an art committee selected the installation from an artist in Arizona.

"It's really something that brings beauty to the campus, but also gives you a lot to think about.  it gives you a great place to sit and it causes people to look at the world in a different way.  I think it's really important, especially on a college campus," Wilkinson said.

Crews have been working to install the art pieces all week.

Friday, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony for the installation.

It will be at 6 p.m. outside of the West Village Dorms at 19th and Indiana.
