SMi's 4th annual Distribution Automation Europe conference will set out how to accommodate the impact of renewables growth and improve communication system architecture to increase the reliability and efficiency of future networks. Deploying a smart distribution network is a critical goal for utilities to help manage electricity needs by making grids more efficient, reliable, and secure and reducing carbon emissions - next generation hardware and software for DA gives utilities many more options in meeting these goals.

London, Southwark (PRWEB UK) 30 August 2014

Many electric distribution utilities are considering deploying Distribution Automation (DA) as part of their grid modernisation strategies to improve reliability, efficiency, asset utilization and performance of the power delivery system. Most DA applications require significant technical and financial investment. This requires a reliable, effective communication network that covers the utility's entire service territory. Lack of a suitable communication infrastructure poses a significant barrier to successful DA implementation.

In preparation for this year's Distribution Automation Europe event SMi spoke with David Trebolle, Active Management, Network Control and Advanced Applications, Union Fenosa Distribucion to find out his opinions on the new role of DSOs and this year's conference.

Interview Extract:
What will attendees take away from your talk?
The new role of the DSO and how regulatory incentives, new technologies and ICT will allow DSO to evolve into the so called smartgrid process.

What do you believe are the biggest challenges for Distribution Automation within Europe?
The new incentive schemes to maximize the integration of DER and the new market design for new flexibility and system services deployment.

What your opinion on the future outlook of Distribution Automation within Europe?
Distribution automation will depend on the oncoming evolved DSO processes: planning, connection, access and operation. The new supervision, control and monitoring needs due to quality of service and security of supply KPIs will foster this evolution.
