About 150 vehicles towed on game day

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Business is picking up for some companies thanks to the increase in attendance at Texas Tech games.

For the university's first game against Central Arkansas, 60,778 fans filled Jones AT&T Stadium, setting a new record for a season opener.

But a packed stadium means packed parking lots.

The Lubbock Police Department said about 150 vehicles were towed Saturday night from around the stadium.

That number does not surprise Scott Bicket with Red Raider Wrecker, whose company was called to tow several of those vehicles Saturday evening.

"Texas Tech is probably the hugest revenue increaser for tow truck companies here in town, hence why I named my company Red Raider Wrecker," Bickel said.

Now that school is back in session and football season is underway, "We are really, really swamped," Bickel said.

So, how much will it cost you to get your vehicle back from Red Raider Wrecker?

"Day one is $291.65," Bickel said.

And every day your vehicle sits at the lot will cost you another $21.65.

"Nobody is happy with me," Bickel said.

No one except the businesses and apartment complexes who rely on his company to control the parking. Those lots are marked with signs.

Nearly all of the businesses surrounding the stadium have towing signs, so we set out to find where you can park on game day.

Texas Tech confirms they still have spaces available in R3, R5 and R7 Red Raider Club lots.

You can also purchase parking online in advance for the commuter west lots, commuter satellite lot or the Raider Park parking garage. Those spots will be on sale until 5 p.m. Friday before the game. You may also purchase these at the lots on game day on a first-come, first-served basis.

The commuter lots permits are $10 in advance or $20 at the lot on game day.

Raider Park parking garage permits are $55 in advance and on game day.

Tech confirmed that the RV parking is sold out for the 2014 football season.

The lot northwest of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, that's located at Texas Tech Parkway and Fourth Street, and the National Ranching Heritage Center offers free parking.

Citibus provides shuttle service for $5 a person from the Health Science Center lots beginning three hours prior to kick off.

Citibus will offer the same service to the parking lots adjacent to the United Supermarkets Arena and those north of the John Walker Soccer Complex. Remember, resident hall parking lots are off limits.

Bickel said when they do tow a vehicle they are required to let the Lubbock Police Department know within two hours, so the vehicle is not reported as stolen.

"Don't think that you are not going to get caught because you are. You might get away with it once, you might get away with it five out of the six home games, but you are going to get caught," Bickel said.
