2 men in Houston human smuggling ring get prison

Posted: Updated:

HOUSTON (AP) - The last two convicted human smugglers linked to a Houston house where 115 immigrants were rescued in March have been sentenced to federal prison.

Jose Aviles-Villa was sentenced Thursday to more than nine years behind bars. Prosecutors in Houston say Antonio Barruquet-Hildeberta received a more than 10-year term.

Those two men and three others in April pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy to harbor and transport illegal immigrants and firearms counts. The other three men in July received prison terms of at least nine years.

The immigrants were discovered March 19 crammed into a less than 1,300-square-foot-home after a woman contacted Houston police about three relatives being abducted.

Prosecutors say many of the immigrants were stripped of their clothing and detained by armed guards until ransoms were paid.
