If you've been worried that your cell phone number can fall into the hands of telemarketers, don't. E-mail rumors to that effect are being called "an urban myth."
Government and cell phone industry officials say there is not a list of cell phone numbers being turned over to telemarketers. Solicitors are still banned from calling cell numbers.
The recent surge in concern was sparked by e-mails alerting people, falsely, that their cell numbers were going to be sold to telemarketing firms. It's not known where the emails originated from, but officials say they are basically a hoax.
Despite those assurances, more than 3 million people added their cell phone number to the governments "Do Not Call" list.
