Former Texas Tech Red Raider basketball player Ray Irvin was killed in a head-on collision Saturday night.
The accident happened just after 11 p.m. on US Highway 87 between Woodrow Road and the Lynn County line. DPS officials say 33 year-old Santos Zamano from Slaton was traveling North in the Southbound lane and struck 40 year-old Irving head-on. Zamano died on impact. Irvin, who is from Lubbock was air-lifted to Covenant Medical Center where he later died. DPS officials say they are awaiting Zamano's toxicology reports, but do believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.
Irvin played basketball for Texas Tech from 1983-1986, and helped Tech win the 1985 Southwest Conference Championship. Irving leaves behind family here in Lubbock.
