So far this year, the local Salvation Army has raised about $86,000 through the Red Kettle bell ringing campaign.
The organization was concerned because they can no longer ring bells outside Target stores. Target has been the busiest location in the past. Locally, it brought in about $16,000 a year. Nationally, it raised $8 million.
New rules allow bell-ringers to set up outside Wal-Mart stores only a few times a week. Despite the obstacles, donations to the local Salvation Army are up 13% over last year.
