In Idalou "The Chocolate War" is creating a real mess for one 8th grade teacher.
Wednesday night a few parents took their concerns about the book to the Idalou School Board. The parents complained that the book was too explicit for an 8th grade class to read.
Rene Stephenson said her granddaughter was too embarrassed to talk about some of the sexual references in the story. "It disturbed her and she felt embarrassed over it. She felt like she didn't have a choice but to read it, and she didn't like it," said Stephenson.
Also in attendance at the meeting, a group of parents and school staff that supported the teacher and her choice to share the book with students.
The 8th grade teacher said the book was at a 6th grade reading level. She also said it had been on the school's shelves since 1978.
The school board is taking the issue into consideration and did not take any action Wednesday night.
