Lubbock Doctor Dies in Plane Crash Near Slaton

Members of the Lubbock medical community are mourning the loss of a colleague who was killed in a single plane crash near Slaton Friday.

The pilot and only person on board was Dr. Michael Marshall. Marshall was an orthopaedic surgeon at University Medical Center.

Authorities say Marshall's plane crashed around 1:30pm Friday afternoon, just north of Slaton in the Yellowhouse Canyon. The small plane crashed on private property, scattering debris over about 300 yards. The plane did not hit any structures. DPS Corporal John Gonzalez says it was a single-seat, twin-engine plane that was experiencing some difficulties after take-off from the Slaton Airport.

"According to witnesses there was structural damage to the airplane that had problems and the pilot lost part of the plane and attempted to turn around and go back to the airport and then came down and crashed and burst in flames," said Corporal Gonzalez.

It is not known where Marshall was headed. The Federal Aviation Administration is examining wreckage to determine what caused the deadly crash.
