Smoke can still be seen from the site of an East Lubbock warehouse fire.
Lubbock firefighters have been working to clear out 4,000 bales of cotton from a warehouse in the 700 block of East 42nd Street. Friday was the third day firefighters had been monitoring the scene.
The fire started on Tuesday afternoon when a hot bale of cotton ignited and spread to the other bales in the warehouse. Firefighters say the fire was contained to one side of the building, but burned cotton is still smoldering.
"Right now we're standing by to assist the crews that are pulling the cotton out. When the smoke gets too intense for them we knock it down with the sprinkler system that's in the warehouse and then they can go back to work," said Lubbock fireman Mark Belcher.
Firefighters say they hope to clear the scene within the next 24 to 48 hours.
