Dozens of local hotels are expecting to fill up with Hurricane Rita evacuees from the Gulf Coast. The Lubbock Hotel/ Motel Association expects a 95% occupancy rate by this weekend. As of Wednesday, September 21, several hotels across Lubbock reported evacuees had already made reservations. Evacuees are expected to check in by Thursday.

Just hours ago, the first of many Rita evacuees arrived in Lubbock.
Early Wednesday morning the first of what could be hundreds of Rita evacuees arrived in Lubbock. University Medical Center is treating two hospital patients from Galveston. Two women arrived just before two a.m. from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Hospital officials tell us they are receiving care in the burn unit. The UT branch at Galveston released all of its burn patients except these two who need extensive treatment.
