Driving Off Without Paying Gas Will Land You In Jail With Stiff Fines

Law enforcement officials have seen an increase in the number of gas drive-offs. Two men who were arrested here in Lubbock after stealing gasoline in Shallowater just before noon on Thursday. The men were caught near North Loop 289 and Quaker. One of the men is a minor and the other is 18-year-old Charles Gormany of Lubbock.

Gormany is charged with a Class C Misdemeanor of theft under $50. They drove off from a store in Shallowater with about $25 worth of gas . NewsChannel 11 spoke to the manager of Fast Stop who says when gas prices soar so do the number of thefts.  "I think the cost of gas with it being so high, people just kind of do things and go crazy and do things that they probably normally wouldn't do in order to get by," explains Fast Stop Manager Tonya Elliot.

If you're caught stealing gas you can be charged with a Class C Misdemeanor equivalent to getting a ticket. And you could face a fine of up to $500. By the way, the charge can be elevated to a felony if you have two prior convictions of theft.
