A delegation of more than 25 middle-school age students from Lubbock and the West Texas area has been selected by the People to People Student Ambassador Program to travel to Europe in June 2005.
Local students will be working to raise the funds to participate in the People to People program.
With a price tag of around $5,000 each, they hope for generous support from the Lubbock and surrounding communities.
In the month of January, the student ambassadors will be collecting used cell phones for recycling, which will net them $3.00 per phone.
With the glut of tossed-aside cell phones expected to reach 500 million this year, the group hopes for this to be a lucrative fundraiser.
They are also asking to enlist the help of local businesses who have phones to discard, and companies who deal in wireless service or cell phones who might have outdated stock to donate.
The delegation is working with phoneraiser.com on the project.
To donate your phone stop by the customer service desk at Market Street, or KK's Craft Mall.
