Obesity Increases Risk of Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are really common. Turns out part of the blame for that painful condition goes to America's increasing waistline. And according to another study in JAMA, the risk appears to be much greater for obese women than for men.

"Men who gained 35 pounds since early adulthood were about 40% more likely to suffer from kidney stone formation. Women who gained over 35 pounds were about 75% more likely to suffer from a stone," said Eric Taylor, MD, Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Researchers studied the medical records of more than 240,000 adults to come to that conclusion. And they say this offers another really good reason to keep our weight within limits, because kidney stones are extremely painful and can lead to other serious complications.
