A disabled vehicle led to a fatal accident near Tahoka on Thursday morning. It happened on U.S. 87 about five miles north of Tahoka around 4:30.
According to DPS troopers 25-year-old Martin Saldana of Slaton had moved his truck off the road into the grass, after it broke down. Then the driver of a semi-truck Northbound on U.S. 87, saw the truck on the side of the road and moved into the left passing lane. But, Saldana crossed into the semi's path and was hit.
"Mr Saldana was hit by the semi and thrown into the center median four lane divided highway. The semi came to a stop on the shoulder of U.S. 87," said DPS Corporal John Gonzales.
Saldana was taken to a Tahoka hospital and pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m. DPS Corporal John Gonzalez says, Saldana did the right thing by getting his truck off the highway but adds his hazard lights were not on and he was wearing dark clothing.
The truck driver, 46-year-old Toby Medina of Lamesa, was not injured in the accident.
