McDonalds has to pay $8.5 million for making a big fat promise and not following up on that pledge.
The "golden arches" announced in the fall of 2002 that it had switched to a healthier oil even though it was still using the bad heart clogging oil five months later. Now, three years later, the consumer advocacy group bantransfat.com, has won that legal fight against McDonalds.
So who gets the $8.5 million? $7 million goes to the Heart Association. McDonalds is required to spend the rest informing the public about its mistake.
