Sugar Association Sues Makers of Splenda

The Sugar Association is suing the makers of the artificial sweetener, Splenda, for saying "it's made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar."

The sugar folks say that's not so because sugar molecules are exchanged for chlorine molecules in order to make the final product. "The product is not natural as a substantial number of Splenda users believe; the truth is that Splenda is made with chlorine," says Andy Broscoe, President and CEO of Sugar Association.

The Center of Science in the Public Interest is not part of the lawsuit, but it came forward today to ask Splenda's marketing people to call the artificial sweetener artificial instead of claiming that it's natural.
