HALE CENTER, TX (KCBD) -
After a battle with an early morning fire more than two years ago, Akin Elementary School in Hale Center is rising up from the ashes.
What was ruled as an accidental electrical fire engulfed the school’s gym and burned it to the ground. It also caused significant damage inside the building, particularly to classrooms. After surveying the damage, principal Jackie King immediately spearheaded a restoration effort.
“We wanted to present the building to the community and the people who might be coming through as a more updated and modern facility, and I think we’ve been able to accomplish all those things,” King said.
The building, which was built in 1966, received what King calls a “21st century facelift” and now boasts refinished scaffolding, upgraded classrooms and facilities, and a new, full-size competition gym.
“I knew that the superintendent would do everything he could to make the building better, and I knew that the board would too,” King said. “They were ready to not just put Akin back, but to make it better for students.”
King says he hopes repairs will be finished by the end of this month.
