Lubbock Airport Tower Could Close Overnight Under FAA Proposal

Control towers at three west Texas airports, including Lubbock, could close during the overnight hours under a proposed cost-cutting plan.

Nationwide, the Federal Aviation Administration is considering closing 48 control towers between Midnight and 5am. Proposed towers in West Texas include Lubbock, El Paso, and Abilene.

The FAA says these airports handle few commercial and cargo flights during those times, but the airport traffic controllers union says the move would compromise safety.
