Thousands of firefighters battle wildfires in Oregon, Washington

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

More than two dozen wildfires were burning in Oregon and Washington Monday, with thousands of firefighters working to get the flames under control.

In Oregon alone, fires had burned hundreds of thousands of acres and prompted evacuation notices in nearby communities in the eastern portion of the state.

Here's the latest information available Monday morning for some of the larger fires:

CANYON CREEK COMPLEX

The Canyon Creek Complex burning south of John Day was more than 37,000 acres in size as of Sunday and zero percent contained.

Approximately 300 firefighters were working the fire, with more expected to arrive in the coming days.

Residents in several areas were under Level 2 and Level 3 evacuation notices.

A Red Cross shelter had been established at the Mt. Vernon Community Center at 640 Ingle Street.

CORNET-WINDY RIDGE

The lightning-caused Cornet-Windy Ridge Fire southeast of Baker City was burning more than 88,000 acres Monday morning.

Firefighters said the fire was 5 percent contained and more than 600 firefighters were on scene.

Firefighters came across an injured rabbit Sunday and nursed it back to health with water and carrots from their sack lunches.

COUGAR CREEK

The Cougar Creek Fire is burning near the southeastern slopes of Mt. Adams in Washington.

The fire had burned more than 22,000 acres as of Sunday evening, and fire crews had the fire 15 percent contained.

The fire was sparked by lightning Aug. 10.

COUNTY LINE 2

The County Line 2 Fire started last week when a trailer lost a tire on Highway 26 near the Warm Springs Reservation.

As of Sunday evening, the fire was burning more than 55,000 acres and was 25 percent contained.

The fire prompted evacuations on the reservation and closed Highway 26 at times.

NATIONAL CREEK COMPLEX

The north entrance to Crater Lake National Park was closed Sunday evening due to the National Creek Complex Fire.

More than 700 firefighters were working to contain the fire, which was burning more than 5,000 acres.

It was 10 percent contained as of Sunday evening.

The fire also prompted evacuations at nearby Diamond Lake Resort.

PHILLIPS CREEK

Fire officials said the Phillips Creek Fire west of Elgin was caused by an abandoned campfire.

As of Saturday, the fire was more than 2,600 acres in size and 89 percent contained.

SODA

The largest fire burning in the region Monday was the Soda Fire, which was mainly in southwestern Idaho but also spilled into eastern Oregon.

The fire had burned more than 280,000 acres by Monday morning and was 70 percent contained.

More than 800 firefighters were on the scene of the Soda Fire.

STOUTS CREEK

More than 1,100 firefighters from around Oregon were helping fight the Stouts Creek Fire east of Canyonville in Douglas County.

Monday morning, the fire was more than 24,000 acres in size and 70 percent contained.
