Once more I am disappointed with the behavior of Lubbock City Councilman Victor Hernandez.
Hernandez' call for an investigation into police behavior was political grandstanding because Victor knew an investigation had already been launched.
Hernandez' release on Facebook expressed no concern for the health and well-being of the victim, Corporal Ryan Durrett, who was assaulted and seriously injured by Juan Carlos Escarcega.
Hernandez only knew about the video because he is a city councilman. And if the release of the information was a violation of the statute, I hope that the District Attorney will take notice and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.
Were there questions of excessive force and speed in the incident? Yes. But our request for the video, made a week earlier, had already prompted an investigation.
Mr. Hernandez was wrong to try to make political mileage off the backs of our law enforcement.
Consider this…I fully support our men and women in uniform who risk their lives daily. Every traffic stop, every time they leave their vehicles to help a citizen, like Corporal Durrett did, is a potentially life threatening encounter.
And until an investigation proves differently, Mr. Hernandez should support them also.
